Stone Type: Metamorphic Agate

Metamorphic Rocks arise from the transformation of existing rock types, in a process called metamorphism. The original rock, which may be igneous, sedimentary or an existing metamorphic rock is subjected to extreme heat and pressure causing physical and chemical alterations in the compositions of the rocks.

The formation of metamorphic rocks differ as rocks go thru metamorphism in stages, some may form in a few tens of years, Other rocks may take millions of years to attain their final form. There are two basic types of metamorphic rocks: Foliated and Non-foliated metamorphic rocks.

Foiliated metamorphic rocks have a layered or banded appearance that is produced by exposure to heat and directed pressure, Non-foliated metamorphic rocks do not have the characterstics. Commonly known sedimentary rocks include Marble, Gneiss, quartzite, Schist, and slate.
