An Inspiration to the Craft
To triumph in the world of art is a privilege that only a few can reach. Father Marko Ivan Rupnik, has accomplished that and more.
Very much an inspiration to our work and our craft, the artist, Marko Rupnik, A Slovenian Jesuit from Zadlog, born in 1954, a priest since 1985, is known for his dazzling artistry of richly colored mosaics adorning the Basilica of the Holy Rosary in Lourdes, France. The Church of the Most Holy Trinity in Fatima, Portugal, and the pope’s private chapel in the Apostolic Palace.
Rupnik’s style is very distinct and instantly recognizable. His monumental figures are fashioned with vividly colored, oversized tesserae; their large eyes, placid faces and mannered poses show the influence of the iconographic traditions of the Eastern churches.
His untraditional use of traditional materials forms abstract beauty up close, while in full, the mosaic murals in its entirety is an icon of Faith. Considered as the artist who created the "Sistine Chapel" of John Paul II. Rupnik communicates the fundamentals of the faith visually, his works are always of religious character, and his inspiration is the Eucharist. To Father Marko Rupnik, his art is his way of being in service to God.
